FAQs

Whitehead Wellness Center in Marion, Illinois, wants to guide you toward better health with effective alternative medicine techniques. Here we share answers to frequently asked wellness questions relating to our chiropractor and services.

Q. How can chiropractic help me?
A. Chiropractic can assist all of us. By working with your other health care professionals (MD, and DO) chiropractic helps maintain your spine in proper alignment. Every organ in the body is under some type of neurological (nerve) control, so it's sensible that if nerve impulses do not get to the organ its function is going to be compromised.

Q. What is an adjustment?
A. In chiropractic work, we often talk about making "adjustments." This is the gentle correction of a subluxation manually or by using a device to relieve the pressure on the nerves and thereby normalize proper function and optimize health.

Q. What are the main causes of subluxations?
A. There are many influences that cause subluxations. The common physical traumas include slips, falls, whiplash, repetitive motion, bad posture, backpacks, and birth traumas (delivery, forceps, suction) Emotional stress can also cause subluxations, and this may manifest from grief, anger, fear, and depression. Finally, chemical imbalance also impacts subluxations, such as increased alcohol or drug use, environmental issues, and poor diet.

Q. Can I adjust myself?
A. No, please do not attempt to adjust yourself. Some people may make their joints "pop" and think they've made an adjustment, but serious damage can occur by manipulating a joint with weakened muscles and ligaments. Adjustments are specific and require the skill of a professionally trained doctor of chiropractic to administer. Even your chiropractic doctor must consult a colleague to personally benefit from chiropractic care.

Q. What if I do not respond to chiropractic?
A. The consultation and examination are necessary to determine if chiropractic care is appropriate for your condition. If not, you may be referred to another specialist who might be able to help. In any event, your health and happiness are our primary goal. We'll always take the time to explain our diagnosis and recommendations.
